South County Boys Winter Basketball
South County Youth Athletics is dedicated to bringing basketball to the kids of South County. Our youth teams feed into our high school programs as appropriate. In some cases, kids and parents decide to continue in recreational sports activities outside of the high school. Our teams compete in the Anne Arundel County Recreation League. We guarantee to teach basketball with the emphasis on fun, positive sportsmanship, hard work, dedication and discipline.
Our county level teams are for boys ages 8 through 17. Team placement with a league (10U, 9U etc.) is determined by the players age as of September 1st. For example, to be placed on a team in a 10U league NO player may not turn 11 on/or before September 1st of that year.
All players must be 8 years old before participating in county league games. Age groups are: 8U (3rd grade), 9U (4th grade), 10U (5th grade), 11U (6th grade), 12U (7th grade), 13U (8th grade), 14/15U (9th/10th grade), and 16/17U (11th/12th grade). Example: If your child is in 4th grade and turned 10 before September 1st, they must play up in the 10U (5th grade) group. Age is what the county use to determine playing level, not grade level. Requests to play up an age group must be made during registration or by email prior to team formation.
The county has 3 different skilled levels of play A, B, & C. The assigned levels allow for all participants to participate and play at or near their skill level, whether it is at a higher competitive level, or at a level where individuals can continue to learn. There are times in the spring that teams may be combined with different age groups to form one team. Practices are twice per week and will be held at Southern Middle School, Tracey's Elementary, Lothian Elementary, Shady Side Elementary or Deale Elementary schools
Winter League Games start on or around December 6th 2025. Games are generally on Saturdays, with some Sundays for all 8U - 13U teams, and Sundays for 14-17U teams. Each team will play a minimum of 10 Winter league Basketball Games. The county selects the gym teams will play in, and this can be anywhere throughout Anne Arundel county. Teams may play in the same gym every week, but in some cases may have to travel to other locations based on gym availability.
REGISTRATION
UNIFORM FEE - if you are a returning player and have purchased a uniform previously, you may continue to use that uniform for the upcoming season. Please list your number to ensure duplicates do not occur.
After the first practice begins, all unpaid registrations are assessed the $25 late fee.
COACHING/VOLUNTEERS
All coaches, including all assistant coaches and anyone over the age of 18 years old that will have any contact with the participants, will need to have a completed background check on file with Recreation and Parks in order to coach, no exceptions.
Coaches must complete a number of certifications provided by Anne Arundel Parks and Rec. Once registered, we will provide you with the information to access and complete.
